VAZHKAI PODI (PLANTAIN POWDER)




INGREDIENTS

Plantain – 1
Small onions (shallots) – 10
Red chillies – 6 to 7
Thoor dal – 1tbs
Uradh dal – 1 tbs
Asafoetida – ¼ tsp
Salt to taste
Oil - 2 tbs

METHOD

Peel the plantain and cut into small pieces.
Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan fry, the red chillies, toor dal, and uradh dal one by one and keep aside.
Now add 2 tsps oil and fry the small onion till golden brown and keep aside.
Add the rest of oil and sauté the plantain pieces.
Keep on sautéing till the plantain is well cooked in the oil itself.
In a mixer grind the chillies, dals, salt and asafoetida into a coarse powder.
Now add onion and plantain and just give a wisk
The powder will not be dry. If you don’t sauté the plantain till cooked the powder will be mushy.

SERVING TIP

Mix the powder in hot rice along with gingely oil.
Papads and vadam are good side dishes.
